Key Takeaways

  • technical and visual example of maximalist, party experience
  • concept and execution done stealthily to avoid premature reveal
  • can still bring the house down if needed

When Intel came together with MTV Iggy - MTV’s then portal for emerging, global music, it was under the auspices of “experimentation.” Thus was born the Music Experiment - an aggregation of tech driven music experiences around the globe featuring emergent acts in exclusive, surreptitious locations.

The Music Experiments LA edition would feature superstar DJ Flux Pavilion in a secret Santa Monica airport hangar, and some badass visuals to go with it.

The airplane hangar was transformed into a gothic, neon-themed, electronic dance party and played music for hundreds including some of Hollywood’s hottest stars. Guests got the chance to experience Intel activations throughout the venue and party over the course of the night.

In conceiving of the experience around this artist, a containment arena with floor to wall projections was our initial proposal. But due to the amount of people, the fire department had something else to say about this idea. So we decided to elevate the cube so that it floated above the raucous crowd.

Then came time for art direction around the motion content for the cube. We listened to countless hours of Flux’s music and generated videos, textures, color washes to compliment different aspects of the music and to be controlled by VJ’s close at hand.

We also programmed some live, interactivity into the visuals with a preview of live social posting during the event.

Of course, as expected by most loud, chaotic, off grid raves, this party was shut down early but rest-assured, all of the college kids got their good night’s sleep.
